Carey Higgins was admitted to practice in 2001 and joined Murdoch Clarke in 2005 after several years practice with another Hobart law firm. Carey is a senior associate of the firm and now practises primarily in property and commercial law including: residential and commercial conveyancing, disposal and acquisition of businesses, wills, estate planning and estate administration, powers of attorney, leasing and other property and commercial matters, advising on business and commercial arrangements, mortgages, securities, and other commercial matters. Carey also provides advice to and undertakes preparation of security documentation for the Murdoch Clarke Mortgage Fund. Most recently Carey presented at the 2009 Mortgage Fund Association of Australia (Tasmania) professional development day and has conducted other presentations and discussions in the areas of wills, estate planning and conveyancing on behalf of the firm. As part of her practice area Carey also represents clients in the Magistrates Court of Tasmania in civil disputes and general litigation matters.
Carey is the current President of the Hobart Community Legal Service Inc, having served on the Board of Management for a number of years and remains a volunteer solicitor for its evening advice sessions since admission to practice. Carey has served on a number of committees including as past president of the Law Society of Tasmania Young Lawyers Southern Committee (2004 and 2005) and past Vice President and Secretary of the Women Lawyers Association of Tasmania Inc. Carey acted as a mentor for 3 years to high school and secondary students as part of the Department of Education and Women Tasmania student mentoring programme. Carey was also nominated in the 2008 Hobart City Council Exceptional Customer Service Awards (Individual Professional).
Carey is committed to supporting charitable and service organisations including assisting the Salvation Army by volunteering at its 2008 Wills Day Promotion and as a member and past secretary of the former Lions Club of Hobart Inc being involved in various activities including fundraising and providing support at community events.
